Fall 2008 news update

It’s been a very busy Summer and Fall. Notably, we completed several wells including one that supports the newly completed medical clinic in Karero (see below). Overall, our staff and partners in East Africa are optimistic about the future. Kenya, in particular, continues to heal as a country from the turmoil of elections last December. It was uplifting to see the collective celebration following the election of one of the country's sons to high office.
Karero Well Opening
In August we had a great celebration opening a new well in Karero with the local community. In attendance was the Kenyan Member of Parliament (MP) representing the district containing Karero. This was an important event. Not only did the festivities highlight the work we and other organization have started in this remote area but it also set the stage for further government investment to build water distribution infrastructure for the community. Below is a short excerpt from the celebration and a few of the comments our Co-Chairman Jeff Spainhour made during the event (translated into Maasai).
New Drill Rig
We have been able to secure special financing arrangements to finally procure the new drill rig. The new rig allows us to greatly expand our water well drilling operations. The drill was manufactured by the Ashok Leyland company of India and will more than triple the capabilities of our drilling team. The drill is currently in transit to the Kenyan port of Mombassa and we anxiously await its arrival. In the mean time, here is a short video of the drill in action shot by our head driller at the factory in India during pre-purchase inspection.
We hosted several interns this summer. They had many unique and exciting opportunities including helping to teach at our high school and assisting at a rural health clinic. If you or someone you know would be interested in a short term intern position with Staff of Hope, click here.
